Shade, glorious shade. The compromise between Atlanta’s heat and the joys of summer. The opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors in comfort. Here are some cool ideas that throw shade on the idea that Atlanta’s summers are too hot to handle.
Go Au Natural
The original and oldest source of shade is a tree so it’s always a nice choice and an eco-friendly, inexpensive way to add shade. A tree can lower a home’s temperature by as much as 20 degrees or more during the hot months. It’s no wonder a mature tree can add thousands at resale!
Overhead Umbrella or Pop-up Canopies
Umbrellas are one of the fastest ways you can add shade to your outdoor living areas, so if you have a social gathering that is just days – or hours – away and you need more shade, umbrellas may be your best option. The most basic solution is an umbrella with a pole you insert into the hole of your patio table. But there are larger, standalone options with straight poles, mounted to bases, that provide shade in a circle around the poles. Keep in mind, over-sized umbrellas only shade limited areas at a time. So, this option is best when you have particular spots that need sun protection, such as group seating.
Another choice would be an off-set umbrella, which allows you to place the base more out of the way and direct the shade to your outdoor entertaining areas. Off-set umbrellas are often more expensive, but their bases are heftier for balance and longevity.
Loving Lattice
Always an attractive design for fences and privacy screens, lattice also provides shade. A lattice canopy makes an attractive addition to any deck, patio, or yard and serves as a great support for climbing plants. That means you can enjoy cooler temps with the added bonus of vibrant greenery all around.
Pergolas Can Provide a Permanent Shade Option
Pergolas can be attached to your home or built free-standing around your patio or backyard. Typically made of pressure-treated wood, pergolas filter light to keep things cool. They make a perfect gathering place for entertainment, particularly if you don’t have the space or topography for a screened porch. A custom pergola can be accessorized in a variety of ways, from ceiling fans to audio speakers and lights. Other shade options include fabric curtains or lattice screens which are easily adjustable when you want to tame hot, sunny days.
