Fences and fence lines offer a variety of benefits including privacy and security. Just because they serve a functional purpose, doesn’t mean that they can’t be a thing of beauty in your yard. We have written many articles about the best plants to grow on a fence line.

Let’s delve into other ideas to help make your fence line gorgeous and your neighbors jealous.

Fence Line Clean-up

Always do a thorough clean-up before adding more decoration. Before anything else, remove debris, brush, and weeds in the area of your fence line. This will give you a clean slate to determine how best to make everything thrive. Tip: the best tool is a weed trimmer to address the grass and the weeds.

Once you have created a clean slate, take a step back and look at your fence with a fresh perspective. Think about colors, styles, and designs that would complement your fence. Are you strapped for ideas? Take a look at our professional advice and tip below.

What to Plant Along Your Fence Line

Consider Planting Ornamental Grasses

Want something large, lush and colorfully eye-catching? Muhly Grass (above, left) is beautiful with purple-pink plumes and native to Georgia — growing up to 18” tall. It prefers full or filtered sun and comes back every year. Ornamental grasses like Cape Thatching Weed (above, right) is the best type of plant if you are thinking of adding green to this area. Once you plant the grass, it will cover large areas of your fence, giving it texture and movement.

Throw Your Flower Beds a Curve

Rather than taking a linear approach, plant your flower beds in a curved shape so they wind in and out in front of your fence. No shock here, but Mother Nature doesn’t bother with straight lines, so the curves are an organic way flower beds were meant to display! If your flower beds are in straight lines, they do very little to soften the look of that area. When the lines are too perfect, they could even look a little forced.

Make Your Fence Line Sparkle with Festive, Seasonal (Holiday) Lights

You can have fun with your fence for Halloween or other holidays — as it’s so easy to decorate your fence! With Halloween, why not try draping orange LED string lights or pumpkins over your fence to delight the little ones? You may need to securely fasten the lights to your fence to protect them against high winds, critters, and anything else that can cause them to shift or move.
