We’re all familiar with Spring Cleaning but there is also a lesser-know tradition we call Fall Re-fresh. And, since we have been designing and creating decks since 1988, we feel qualified to share ways to refresh your deck!

 

Do a Deep Clean

A re-fresh should start with a deep clean—right? Early or late fall (before or after the leaves come tumbling down) are the ideal times to clean your deck after a summer of heavy use. Move everything off the deck, rent a power washer or simply use warm water and dish detergent. A stiff broom can also do the trick when paired with a cleaning solution made for decks. This shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours unless your deck needs refinishing. You’ll need at least 48 hours after the refinish to use the deck, but you’ll love the results!

Hang Some Art Nearby

Focus on pieces made from fiberglass, wood, metal, or glass because they are great outdoor options. Consider adding spotlights to highlight the art when you entertain in the evening. If your choice is on a canvas, make sure it is treated to be weather-resistant. Hint: try and keep your pieces out of direct sunlight to ensure their integrity and beauty.

Upgrade Lighting

Cooler fall weather means even more quality time on your deck, so why not give it an evening glow with outdoor lighting? Solar string lights come in unique designs and provide a festive feel, or scatter a few lanterns on your deck for a more subtle effect. Add step lights along the edges to keep everyone safe when the lights are low.

Bring in Fall Colors

Update your seat cushions for the season by choosing replacements in orange, red, yellow, or brown. Add pumpkins (and if you want to be different, make them white). Or mix traditional orange with white. Don’t forget new throw blankets to keep you warm when temperatures drop.
