spiral staircases

Decks come in all shapes and sizes—no surprise there. But would it surprise you to know that decking staircases also come in a variety of flavors? In this article we’ll address one style in particular and why it has grown in popularity over recent years.

Spiral staircases offer a very cost-effective way to individualize and add elegance to your deck. Because of their configuration they take up less space than traditional stairs which means a spiral staircase has a relatively small “footprint” leaving more open space on the deck itself.

Unlike traditional stairs which require support posts, railings and the stairs themselves, spirals are practically invisible. That means they don’t block prime views to your garden, lakes, backyard features and more.

Be Wary of the Spiral Staircase Kit

Typically, a builder will offer spirals that are usually from a kit. This can be a red flag for future problems like rusty bolts, “weeping” center posts that always appear to be dirty and other fit and finish issues. Construction kits make it virtually impossible to repaint areas that are rusting. That’s why we custom make spiral stairs in our own shop with welded connections and exacting specifications.

Custom Construction Makes a World of Difference

We know from experience why custom construction is key to long term happiness with a spiral staircase. We start by ensuring that the design complies with local building codes. We then visit the home and create a template that reflects the conditions of the job site. Once we complete the template, we use it to construct the stairs in our shop. Then we take the very important step of priming and painting the structure twice, ensuring that we allowed sufficient dry time between coats. A careful look at the material we use for step treads (the part you step on) reveals the absence of visible fasteners. Rather than drilling holes for the painted surface which would not be adequately protected with primer and paint, we use an industrial adhesive to hold down the tread material. We use a composite deck material for the treads which is extremely stable to handle the expansion and contraction that occurs during the different seasons.

Remember, spiral staircases offer a wide range of benefits. But, without customer construction, it could lead to a long and winding road of disappointment.
