What to Expect During a Custom Portico Project
A new portico should feel like it belongs to your home. The roof, columns, and trim need to work with the existing entrance, and the covered area needs to fit how you use the front door.
At Georgia Front Porch, we design and build custom front porches and porticos. We want homeowners to feel comfortable asking questions before deciding what to build. Understanding the design, estimate, and construction scope can help you move forward with clearer expectations. Here is what to discuss as you plan a custom portico project.
Bring your goals to the consultation
Start with what you want the new entrance to do. Are you looking for a more welcoming focal point, a cover at the front door, or a design that better suits the home? Photos of your entrance and a few inspiration images can help explain what you like.
Set aside time for the conversation, and include the people involved in the decision when possible. You do not need to arrive with a finished design. Inspiration gives us a starting point; the right solution also has to fit your home and site.
Shape the design around the existing home
Consider the entrance as part of the overall front elevation. Roof shape, column proportions, and trim details should relate to the home’s architecture. A design that looks appealing in a reference photo may need a different scale or treatment at your front door.
As we discuss ideas, explain which details matter most to you. Ask how the proposed design connects with the existing structure and which material choices belong in the estimate. The aim is a coordinated entrance, with decisions made together rather than left to assumptions.
Understand the estimate and included work
Review the proposed work in writing. The written scope should clearly describe the design, dimensions, roof treatment, columns, trim, and finishes. Ask which related items are included and which would need a separate arrangement.
We do not provide masonry, painting or staining, or landscaping. We can recommend contractors for those parts of the project. Confirm any related work, including electrical work, in the written scope. When comparing proposals, compare the included scope and the total to ensure you are comparing equivalent work.
Confirm responsibilities before construction
Ask about any required approvals and who will handle each step. Discuss homeowner association requirements, permits, site preparation, and access as they apply to your property. Make sure you understand what information or decisions are needed from you before work can begin.
Ashley and Mandie can keep you informed about schedules and answer questions. Time spent on planning, approvals, or scheduling is separate from the time construction takes on-site. A project-specific discussion is more useful than assuming your portico will follow another homeowner’s timeline.
Review the work and ask about care
Dana typically reviews the completed project to check quality and discuss the homeowner’s satisfaction. Keep a list of questions about finishes, outstanding items, and care instructions so they can be discussed clearly.
If your needs change during the project, raise them before additional work is carried out and confirm any change to the scope. Clear decisions and communication help keep the finished entrance aligned with the design you chose.
