If you’ve been considering adding a fence to your yard or replacing an existing structure, it’s time to take a close look at horizontal designs.

Expand the Appearance of Your Backyard Space

Let’s start with the basics. Horizontal boards make both the fence and yard appear longer and bigger, perfect if you want to emphasize a spacious garden or yard by keeping things simple and linear. When you think about it, this makes perfect sense! A vertical fence often is defined by its height and can dwarf patios, decks, and other backyard features. Horizontal designs have the opposite effect.

A horizontal fence will naturally draw the eye from one side of the yard to the others. This gives you much more flexibility to use plants and borders to break up the fence line.

Something Everyone Else Doesn’t Have

Another great advantage of a horizontal fence is that it most likely will be different than the majority of fences in your neighborhood. On your next walk, take note of fences near your home and count the number that are horizontal. Our experience as fence builders says that they will be few and far between, primarily because your neighbors haven’t flipped their script!

Still Offers Plenty of Privacy

If it is privacy you want, choose a design in which the boards are installed so close together that there are no gaps. Of course vertical fences can achieve the same effect but what they can’t do is give a modern edge that a horizontal design can deliver.

A Great Way to Tie Landscaping Together

We use wood exclusively because it offers a very natural look and a wide range of material options. Plus, there are so many stain choices available, you can truly customize the look of your fence. Of course, wood does require some maintenance such as staining every 3 years or so to keep your fence from weathering prematurely.

One consideration is that many wood horizontal fences use concrete or stone pillars for support which makes it easier to link your fence to other structures like a deck or the house’s façade.
