What is Pressure-Treated Wood?
Pressure-treated lumber enters a customized cylinder or tank that is depressurized—in other words, all the air and atmosphere is sucked out of the tank. A special preservative is then pumped into the depressurized tank, which allows it to penetrate and deeply infuse the wood. The EPA has approved several chemicals for use in pressure-treated lumber, but the most commonly used for residential purposes is alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ).
The pressure-treatment process allows powerful preservatives—with anti fungal and anti-insect properties—to penetrate deeply into the grains and fibers of the wood. This is different from sealing and coating, as it results in protection from the inside out. In many cases, outdoor decks constructed with pressure-treated lumber will last 15-20 years if properly maintained. This rivals the lifespan of decks made with ultra-modern composite materials.

The pressure treatment helps preserve its longevity outdoors, with good results against moisture, mold, and insect damage for up to 20 years. There is an optional upgrade for wood that is kiln-dried and treated (KDAT) before and after pressure treatment to help mitigate any warping or splitting.

Pressure-Treated Decks Last for Years to Come
Harvested from Southern yellow pine, pressure-treated lumber has a nice natural wood appearance with an EPA-certified MCQ treatment. To preserve that warm, rich look, regular periodic maintenance is required. Sun does more damage to pine than water. Atlanta Decking recommends an oil based stain or sealer that acts as a ‘sunblock’ for your deck which provides UV protection and also seals moisture out.
